Learn MoreObesity in Children
Obesity is a condition that, unfortunately, is not restricted to adults alone. Children, too, are falling prey to obesity and the ailments that it brings along with it. So, how does one go about preventing obesity in children and what are the reasons that more and more children are gaining weight?
Reasons for Obese Children
The reasons for obesity in children are indeed the same as in adults- lack of activity, too much of television viewing, unhealthy eating habits and dependence on junk foods.
Preventing Obesity in Children
Children can be encouraged to lose weight and lead healthier lives by making a few important changes.
Stock Healthy Foods- Keeping healthy foods in the house will ensure that children snack on fruits and vegetables instead of biscuits and other junk.
Drink Water - This will be a good change for the whole family. Avoid drinking sugary sodas that only pile on empty calories and instead, drink plain water. It’ll keep kids hydrated and also, cut down on calories and weight.
Encourage Physical Activity- Enroll kids into sports and other physical activities and get them moving. Or simply take them to the park and play ball or catch with them. An hour of energetic play can easily burn hundreds of calories without even realizing.
Limit Television Viewing- Sitting in front of the T.V and munching on snacks is the easiest way for kids to gain weight. So, limit viewing to an hour or 45 minutes and discourage snacking while watching.
Have Meals at the Table -Eating together as a family will not only bring you closer to your kids, you’ll be able to monitor eating and portion sizes without being too obvious.
Never Make Fun - If your child is obese, please, never make fun of his weight or inability to lose it. This will only hurt his self-esteem and discourage him from making any effort whatsoever.
These simple steps will help a child to deal with obesity and fight it successfully.
